Matching Probability Measures: A Problem at the Interface of Combinatorics, Probability and Analysis

ABSTRACT: In my talk I will illustrate old and recent developments on the matching problem, a discrete optimization problem whose random version has deep links with Optimal Transport, Analysis and Probability. In particular, I will mention how a new ansatz introduced by Caracciolo, Parisi, Lucibello and Sicuro, put on rigorous grounds in a series of papers with my collaborators, leads to new progress in the field. I will also illustrate some of the many variants of this problem, as well as open questions.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:Luigi Ambrosio is an outstanding mathematician whose fundamental, eclectic and deep contributions to geometric measure theory, the calculus of variations, the theory of optimal transport, partial differential equations and their applications, probability and optimization have earned him numerous awards and international recognition in the mathematical community. Ambrosio was a plenary speaker in at the Fifth European Congress of Mathematics (Amsterdam, 2008) and the International Congress of Mathematics (Rio De Janeiro, 2018). He has been awarded the Premio Bartolozzi (1991), the Premio Caccioppoli (1998), the Fermat Prize (2003) , the ERC Advanced Grant (2009), a Ph.D honoris causa from the ENS Lyon (2015), the Blaise Pascal Medal (2019), the Balzan Prize (2019) and the Riemann Prize (2022). Ambrosio is a member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, the Academia Europea and the Istituto Lombardo, Accademia di Scienze e Lettere.

Ambrosio’s mathematical career is intimately linked to the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, where he received his mathematical training under the supervision of Ennio De Giorgi culminating in his Ph.D in 1988. He returned to the Scuola Normale in 1998 as Full Professor of Mathematical Analysis (a position he still holds) and serves as Director of this prestigious institution since 2019. During the past 25 years, Ambrosio has supervised a multitude of talented Ph.D students who have gone on to populate the most prestigious institutions worldwide.
